Chinese Earthquake
[Mr Gong inspecting the boxes at the LifeBox warehouse]

The Chinese Consul General in Manchester, Mr Gong Jianzhong, visited the LifeBox warehouse where the emergency box charity operated by the Rotary Club of Denton & Audenshaw is based. Mr. Gong accepted, on behalf of the Peoples Republic of China, a consignment of 100 LifeBoxes and 1200 Lifestraws.

The boxes contain items which enable a family group to re-establish their home and life after disaster and include clothes, cooking utensils, blankets, tools, household and first aid items. These boxes are being sent to Guang Yuan, one of five remote cities badly damaged in the earthquake. A Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Beijing is working in the area and will follow up the distribution of the LifeBoxes. Because of remoteness not much aid, as yet, has arrived in North Sichuan province and the LifeBoxes should arrive by 26th May in the stricken area.
Lifestraws are personal water filtration devices enabling recipients to obtain clean drinking water from contaminated water when there is no alternative good water source available.

The Rotary Club of Denton & Audenshaw holds items at the warehouse that are obtained by the LifeBox fundraisers throughout the country and the boxes are filled by volunteers. They are held in stock until disaster strikes. The club and their supporters are always working hard with various fund-raising activities to build up stocks of vital aid ready for the next inevitable call.
